The Power of Resilience
August 11, 2009 • By Brian A. Holmes
As I am writing this week's entry, I am flying at 32,000 feet in seat 4C, enjoying the last leg of a very long trip home. As many of you know, I spent the last 7 days in the great nation of Zimbabwe. While I went to be a part of an annual international conference, I was deeply moved by the contrast between my first trip there 13 years ago, and now. What a difference a few years makes. The economy of this nation came to a grinding halt last year, and is just now showing signs of leveling off. While there are still many who are struggling, it is obvious that faith has carried the people there through.
Resilience. That's the word that comes to mind. The capacity to go through hardship, trauma, economic devastation, and political meltdowns, and still maintain hope, a view to a brighter future, and an absolute faith in God. I am deeply moved by this amazing people. What an example to you and I.
As difficult as things many be in your life right now, you have the power (and even the nature) to bounce back and move forward. Even if you have failed, your future is still secure in Him. If you feel hopeless and at a dead end, please know that, "weeping may endure for a night, but joy ..."
I encourage you this week to reflect on who and where you are; the blessings you have been afforded; the family and friends you have in your life; and the destiny that is secure in God. Let us not be bogged down in negativity. Let us not be overwhelmed with the "news of the day". May our faith and our confidence be grounded in God's Word for our lives, and the destinies He has released to each of us.
